CASREM (Cognitive Agricultural and Storage Renewable Energy Management) is an innovative programme developing a next-generation energy optimisation platform for farms and cold storage facilities. The project combines advanced forecasting, artificial intelligence, and real-time control to improve how energy is generated, stored, and used across complex, energy-intensive sites. The consortium includes Brain Innovation, Edinburgh Napier University, EOS Sustainable Energy Solutions, alongside Scene Connect.
Scene Connect has played a central role in the project’s delivery. This includes leading data collation and analysis, bringing together detailed operational, energy, and environmental datasets to inform system design and optimisation. Scene has also supported exploitation and dissemination activities, engaging with industry stakeholders, identifying routes to market, and helping position CASREM for commercial rollout across the agriculture and cold storage sectors. In addition, Scene will lead the on-site installation and monitoring of the Edge Management Prototype at Cononsyth Farm, supporting real-world validation of the platform.
At its core, CASREM integrates Edge AI, IoT-enabled monitoring, and predictive modelling to dynamically manage renewable energy, storage, and demand. By forecasting both generation and consumption, the system optimises energy use in real time, reducing costs and improving resilience.
The project also incorporates a virtual reality training environment, enabling users to better understand energy flows and operational strategies. With a clear pathway to commercialisation, CASREM demonstrates how intelligent energy management can unlock greater value from renewable assets while supporting decarbonisation across key sectors.
