Scottish Start-Up to Help Provide Energy Access to World’s 2.7 Billion Energy Poor

Technology company Connected Energy is backed by UK government and private investors to work with local suppliers in low- and middle-income countries to advance the UN’s Energy for All agenda.

Scotland-based company will use their newly developed information and communication technologies to support local companies to provide life-improving renewable energy technologies in the Global South.

In 2015, access to clean and affordable energy was recognised as a major development challenge through its own Sustainable Development Goal: SDG 7. With more that 1bn people without electricity and 2.7bn without clean cooking, the world faces severe energy access problems. Often lack of energy services are due to remoteness or inability to pay – with serious consequences ranging from hindered economic productivity, to increased exposure to health hazards.

Connected Energy has been formed by Scene Connect and CREATIVenergie, two Edinburgh-based companies, to support the provision of sustainable solar and biogas energy. The company offers integrated monitoring and support systems designed to streamline customer billing and product maintenance. Its technology platform includes a range of sophisticated technologies specifically engineered to widen the reach of energy access markets.

Joel Chaney, Director of Research & Development, Connected Energy, said “As a social enterprise, we should do everything we can to build local companies’ capacity. Now we are in the position to provide many new cost-effective technologies that can facilitate and accelerate quality energy services in difficult environments.”

Connected Energy aims to empower local businesses, in both India and East Africa. Their platforms will be made available to tech savvy entrepreneurs that are ready to incorporate new techniques into their own businesses.

Vijay Bhopal, Managing Director, Connected Energy, said “We are excited to utilise some of Scotland’s excellent expertise renewables and IT towards achieving SDG7, and delighted to have been backed by the Government and British investors in this venture.”

A series of pilot projects will be undertaken in East Africa and India in the following months before commercial release in Autumn 2018.
