AMAZE Mull - Feasibility Study on Electric Vehicle and Renewable Energy Hubs

In 2023, Scene conducted a feasibility study focused on the development of community renewable energy hubs and an EV vehicle and charging network on the island of Mull. Building on the Clean Energy Transition Agenda (CETA) developed in 2023, the purpose of the study was to provide viable community-led solutions for climate action and decarbonisation on the Mull Archipelago. It forms part of the AMAZE project (The Archipelago of Mull Actions for Zero Emissions) which is a partnership project between the NESOI consortium, Mull and Iona Community Trust and the AMAZE volunteer steering group.

Scene conducted a technical analysis of the seven proposed hub sites at seven community-owned halls across the island. After in-house energy modelling, bespoke energy audit reports for each of the halls were produced which identified their existing energy usage and emissions, reccomending energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy capacity and chargepoint installations. The halls' overall suitability as hub sites was analysed based on these audit reports, a baseline transport assesment, a community survey and an assessment of prospective local demand. An economic-financial analysis judged the overall viability of the community-owned car club and market research presented the range of procedural and regulatory considerations. Finally, Scene proposed a preferred solution to the community, providing an action plan for next steps and information on funding opportunities.
