In 2024, Scene assessed the feasibility and viability of integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at 3 sites owned by East Riding and Yorkshire Council, and other domestic opportunities. The proposed developments included a stand-alone BESS system, BESS co-located with an existing solar farm, BESS co-located with solar and a large local consumer, and aggregated BESS across 800 domestic properties as a virtual power plant.

The technical and financial viability of these developments was assessed, and alternative scenarios compared. The commercial opportunities appraised included for the provision of grid services, such as wholesale trading, frequency services, balancing mechanism, and capacity market participation. Reccomendations were made to the optimised sizing of the BESS system in each case, and the expected financial returns.
