Scottish Government's CivTech programme is a different way of procuring services for the public sector, by setting challenges and inviting innovators to pitch their ideas, and then working collaboratively to develop these into solutions. Challenge 7.7, from the South of Scotland Enterprise, was certainly ambitious: asking how technology could help communities and households understand their energy needs and work with local suppliers towards sustainable energy solutions. Scene pitched its ZUoS modelling software as a way to simulate the energy demand of a home and then model scenarios to improve that performance through low carbon technologies and energy efficiency measures. We successfully progressed through the exploration and accelerator stages of the programme to the demo day pitch - in front of a live audience of over 400 people and live streamed to over 1,000. Following this, the project sponsor invited Scene and the other challenge company - Novoville - to collaborate on a pre-commercial agreement to develop a protype service. This has combined their user journey with our modelling capability to develop a new service to support the delivery of retrofit at pace and scale. The two companies are continuing to collaborate and are working to launch a new commercial service in the coming months.
