Scottish Enterprise's CANDO feasibility calls provide the opportunity for innovators to test new concepts. Scene responded to the CANDO Green Heat challenge with an idea to assess the feasibility of taking a new approach to collecting the data necessary to plan, detail and cost green heating in Scotland's homes, through repurposing floor plans prepared for the sale of property to make green heat plans. Hundreds of thousands of these floor plans already exist, and if they can be repurposed, it would present a great opportunity to significantly reduce the upfront costs for decarbonising heat. The team adopted a 'design thinking' approach to firstly understand the problem to make sure we were 'doing the right thing' and then to rapidly prototype potential solutions to 'do the thing right'. We established that what we were attempting was technically feasible, but also that uncertainties with the accuracy of the underlying data meant there were better approaches to achieve more accurate results for the effort required. The learning from the project has been invaluable in developing efficient ways of collaboratively testing concepts before significant development effort is deployed, and in shaping the strategy for our heat energy modelling expertise.
